A Future For The Past

The conference proceedings report on the first three years of Strategic Technical Research in English Heritage's Cathedral Grants Scheme. The scientific and technical investigations were commissioned to find answers to the common building decay problems faced by cathedrals. They have a wider usefulness in the conservation field being equally applicable to the majority of historic buildings in the United Kingdom and overseas which are suffering the ravages of material decay and deterioration. Research topics include: * decay of polishable limestones * lime-based conservation mortars * stone consolidants * fire research * timber decay * underside lead corrosion * tile floor conservation The findings will benefit the wider conservation community and all those concerned with the repair and maintenance of ancient buildings and monuments.
