Venetian Turpentine or Venice Turpentine is exudation from Austrian larch. The Tirol region in Austria is renowned for the production of this Balsam. In medieval times this balsam was sold by way of Venice, hence it was called Venice Turpentine. Utilizing the correct amount of this balsam provides a splendid glossy transparency and enamel-like surface to the film. Films including too much of this balsam harden very slowly, are fragile and tend to yellow.
