Backing Iron

A pair of wedge shaped hardwood boards with steel faced beveled edges. The wedge shaped design concentrates the force exerted on the text block just under the spine when secured in a press. The steel edges protect the surface of the boards during the backing process, as the outer sections (leaves) on both sides of the text block are bent and shaped with a bookbinders hammer. Meant to convert a lying press to a job backer.
