Although especially designed for printmaking, these papers are also well suited for a range of media including watercolor, pen and ink, pencil, charcoal, pastel and more.
Also be sure to check our full line of Japanese papers, which can often be used for Chine Colle and printmaking.
Paper mills all over the world produce Printmaking Papers that are available in different weights, sizes and surfaces.
Different mills produce papers with distinctive surfaces recognizable to that specific mill. The various surface textures can be advantageous for different printmaking techniques, or desired outcomes. For example a paper with a rougher surface might be sought after for a relief print, whereas a paper with a smoother surface might be preferable to capture fine lines in an engraving.
Papers can be made from cotton, wood pulp or other fibers. Papers can also be "sized" with different types and amounts of gelatin, which alters the absorption of the paper.
To figure out which paper is right for you, it is helpful to experiment with a variety of papers to see which works best for your process!
